Little Green Garden

A collection of thoughts. Most of them about Indonesia right now. Formerly about Buenos Aires. Also gardening, Portland, travel, food and adventures.

Some takeaway I picked up on the way home: fresh mango juice, chicken, noodles, green beans and rice. Maybe not the most well-rounded dinner I’ve ever had, but it was really delicious and cost two dollars.
My friend calls all variations of this meal “nasi ini.“  You ask for rice (nasi) and then say “this” (ini) as you point to various things. Rice this/Nasi ini. I like it.
In unrelated news, the highlight of my day today was when a co-worker taught me to say the equivalent of “this place is like a pig sty” in bahasa indonesia. I ran around for a while yelling that at unsuspecting Indonesian coworkers, which was pretty fun. It was all very professional.

Two Absurd Things I Said Today

“I can only sign five more autographs and then I have to go.”

“Ok, That’s enough coughing. Can everyone please stop coughing?” (30 9-year-olds were coughing at me. I’m not exactly sure what happened there.)

Also, a student today thought that my name was “Miss Jelly.” I kind of wish that was my name.

Yesterday was a public holiday and I was able to go with a few friends to see Krakatoa. I agreed to go ages ago without doing any research at all, so I was a little dismayed when I realized this “day trip” was actually a massive journey that included a 2:30am departure from my home. From start to finish the whole adventure took 23 hours, but it ended up being completely worth it. We took a speed boat to the volcano, climbed up as far as the guide would let us, ate lunch on the beach with a bunch of lizards (terrifying. More on them soon), and then snorkeled around the island. It was awesome. The island felt kind of alive in a “don’t make the volcano angry or it will destroy you” kind of way; I liked it.

Perhaps the most brutal conversation with a student yet…

11-year-old girl: Miss, do you have a boyfriend?
    Kallyn: No, I don’t.
Girl: Do you think you will have a boyfriend later?
    Kallyn: Probably
Girl: I don’t think so. You’re too old.

This picture is very, very Indonesia to me. I love the color of the house and the way it feels like if you turn your back for a second, nature is going to take over entirely. And then of course, a sprinkling of omnipresent motorbikes.

I did some unintentionally elephant themed shopping in Little India.

Little India is my favorite neighborhood in Singapore. It’s really bright and beautiful and alive with activity. I especially love the men frantically stringing together the flower garlands that are for sale on every corner. The mix of perfume and curry in the air is overwhelming and makes you feel like you’re actually in India. My favorite part of the trip was eating saag paneer off a banana leaf and watching a beautiful woman in a sari eat messy Indian food with her hand in an impossibly elegant manner. I have absolutely no idea how she managed, but it was amazing to watch (I wasn’t brave enough and opted for a spoon).
